Dodgers rookie manager Don Mattingly's first job is to sort out the Dodgers infield. Can he get something out of 1b James Loney who is not living up to Dodger expectations? There is an open audition at second base. Shortstop and Third base have their starters, but there it is a matter of keeping them healthy. If Mattingly can find the correct combinations, then LA is a serious contender in the NL West.
First Base: Last Chance for James Loney?
James Loney, who is entering his age 27 season, is a very frustrating player. He does have a textbook line drive swing, good to very good defense and solid plate discipline. However, Loney is a below-average first baseman offensively and his 2010 season confirms it (.267/.329/.395). Part of the problem is Loney just is a much better hitter in his career away from Chavez Ravine (.307/.361/.493). The Dodgers do have a good lefty first basemen without a lot of power (at least at home), that likes to mash away from their home park. The Dodgers are not going to get a lot back for Loney, and there is a decent chance that Loney could blow up (stats wise) leaving the Dodgers. LA will offer Loney a contract, but continue to look to deal him. If he remains in LA, then he will be the Dodgers starting 1b.
Second Base: Open Call
There is not even a nominal second base starter here. Ryan Theriot is going to be non tendered after a dismal 2010 (.242/.323/.283) for the Dodgers. That leaves it wide open for someone to claim the second base job.
